Calling No-one

without comments

When testing a fire alarm system, my test key got stuck in a call point. Fair enough, sometimes the key can get caught on an internal spring. So I took the face off:

Only to find out that there was nothing inside!

It has been removed now, but it is very dangerous to have a call point that won’t trigger the alarm. Not good at all!

2.5mm2 Is Not The Same As, Or Equal To A Cartridge Fuse

without comments

Some of my friends asked me to check their consumer unit, as all the power had gone out. There was no power coming to the board, so we figured out the main fuse had blown. We took out the old one to have a look at it, and it turned out that there wasn’t a fuse at all, just a bit of corroded, burnt-looking bit of 2.5mm2 wrapped around the terminals.

Bad landlord.

Broken Socket

without comments

An elderly man had reclined his electric chair onto the socket face, crushing it. None of the staff had thought to move the chair off of it before calling for me. I told him to stay totally still, and ran for the breaker. Turned off the circuit, moved the chair forward, and gave the staff a basic lesson on why electricity might be bad for your health.
